Weaving of myth
Birth and rebirth of nature in the mosaics of the Villa Romana del Casale.
The Villa Romana del Casale, a residential home of late antiquity, lived, since its construction, a direct and intense relationship with the surrounding landscape, sensitive to changing climatic conditions, a point that was well defined in some mosaic iconography, related to classical culture, which goes through specific environments. The theme of the cyclical time of nature, in its links with agricultural production, is addressed through the use of mythological stories, related to the theme of metamorphosis, and allegorical figures, identifiable in the “Seasons”. Both report to the regenerating power of nature and its action of birth and rebirth, so intrinsically linked identity to the land of Sicily, through the myth of Demeter and Kore.
